Rising Revenue Helps South Carolina Legislators Fund Next Year's Budget.

Apr. 16--Senate budget writers pulled a $110 million rabbit out of their hat late Thursday, taking advantage of an improving economy this fiscal year to help pay for next year's state services, including higher raises for state employees.

The Senate Finance Committee had been trying to cut state services by that same amount, a hole twice the size of the budget of a big state agency, such as the Department of Mental Health. But they found a solution when members of the Board of Economic Advisors said Thursday they see more money coming in this fiscal year than they expected -- $130 million more -- by June 30, the end of the fiscal year.
