Macon, Ga., Gains Head Start in Fixing Air Pollution.

Apr. 16--Macon is ahead of the game in cleaning up its bad air, say state environmental officials.

Because Macon has too much ozone, the primary component of smog, the EPA has put Bibb County and part of Monroe County in a "nonattainment zone," requiring a plan for bringing air quality up to federal standards by 2009.

But state regulators were expecting an earlier deadline of 2007, so they had already started preparing. The state worked with Georgia Tech on a Fall Line Air Quality Study that has provided research to choose pollution-reduction strategies, said state air chief Ron Methier.
