South Carolina Dairy Farmers Seek State Board to Help Protect against Losses.

Apr. 20--BOWMAN, S.C. -- Milking starts at 6 a.m. at Weathers Farms and lasts more than four hours. The cows are herded into the barn and attached to milking machines three times a day, seven days a week.

If there's a good price for milk, brothers Hugh and Landy Weathers make money. If the price is low -- as it has been the last two years -- staying in business is a struggle.

"My concern now is: 'Do I want to encourage my sons to take on this challenge?'" says Hugh Weathers, 47, whose oldest son is 18. "If I think prices are going to be like they were the last two years, I can't knowingly encourage him to take that on."
