NASA Says Much Work Remains to Make Space Shuttle Safer.

May 1--WASHINGTON -- NASA is doing well in its effort to make the space shuttle safer, officials said Friday, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

"We have made significant progress across the board in all the items that we think are required to return to flight," Wayne Hale, deputy manager of the shuttle program, said during a briefing for reporters.

"We think we have our arms around all the problems that we need to address," he said.

Hale said the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is still on track for a launch next spring, and said he's confident that there is enough time between now and then to finish all of the work...
