Mississippi House Vote Keeps Proposed Hotel Tax Hike Alive.

May 2--JACKSON, Miss. -- A House vote Saturday technically keeps a proposal to raise hotel taxes in Harrison County to fund a Coast Coliseum expansion alive, but many expect the Senate to nix the tax hike.

The House voted 105-12, with all the Harrison County delegation supporting it, to raise hotel room sales taxes by 2 cents on the dollar, which would provide $61 million for Coliseum expansion and renovation.

But the Senate has passed a version of the legislation that strips out the tax increase. It instead allows the Coliseum's governing board to co-opt the expiring 1-cent-on-the-dollar hotel tax currently being used to pay the last of the debt from a...
