May 2--A university education is supposed to help prepare students for a job.

Now it could be that Lamar University will prepare jobs for the students it educates.

Lamar's College of Engineering has been working quietly for the past few years on research into composite materials. Composites are a fiber-polymer mix with more strength than steel and more resistance to corrosion.

A consultant for the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce also identified composites, or advanced materials, as an industry well-suited to Southeast Texas.
