May 5--Under normal flight conditions, the Vought RF-8G Crusader jet would have made the 10-mile trip in seconds.

It took about 45 minutes on the back of a flatbed truck.

The old warplane, with two police escorts, weaved its way from its hangar at Vought Aircraft Industries Inc. near Grand Prairie to its new home at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas.

Surprised motorists took second and third looks as they watched the 54-foot-long plane rumble along two lanes of traffic early Tuesday.

On the narrowest streets, the craft's wings stretched into oncoming traffic, which police then blocked off.
