The Hartford Beats Earnings Forecasts; SEC Launches Probe of Mutual-Fund Arm.

May 5--The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. reported Tuesday that first-quarter earnings beat forecasts, and that federal regulators have started a new probe of the company's annuity and mutual fund businesses.
The Hartford also raised earnings estimates for the full year as annuity sales jumped and new business increased in property-casualty lines.
The Hartford disclosed it has received subpoenas from the Securities and Exchange Commission, and that the agency's Division of Enforcement has started an investigation of the company's variable annuity and mutual fund operations.
