Sony Launches Online Music Distribution Service in United States.

May 5--NEW YORK -- Sony Corp. on Tuesday launched an Internet-based paid music distribution service in the United States, allowing computer users to download music for 99 cents a piece and $9.90 for an album.

Sony, which initially offers 500,000 music pieces for the service, said users can also transfer the downloaded music into the company's portable mini discs.

Sony, which sold an estimated 2.5 million units of portable music devices in the United States on a cumulative basis, apparently hopes to boost the sales through the paid music distribution service.

Sony is believed to vie with Apple Computer Inc., whose digital music player iPod has gained growing...
