Equitable Gas in Southwestern Pennsylvania Hires Florida Meter Reading Firm.

May 6--Starting this month, Equitable Gas Co. customers in southwestern Pennsylvania will have their meters read by employees of a newly retained contractor, Utility Meter Services.

Equitable hired the Florida-based unit of tree-service provider Asplundh Inc. to read the meters of more than 250,000 customers after it monitored the work practices of its own meter readers.

The company decided to terminate 12 of 17 meter readers as a result of the monitoring and has offered different positions in the company to the remaining five, spokeswoman Kim Francis said.
