Equal Plans New Reduced-Calorie Sweetener for Baking.

May 8--The company that makes the artificial sweetener Equal says it will market a new reduced-calorie sweetener that can be used in baking, potentially a plus for people on a low-carbohydrate diet.

Chicago-based Merisant said it will begin marketing Equal Sugar Lite this fall. The product is half sugar, with the remainder a mix of aspartame and other flavorings and ingredients, giving it half the calories of sugar.

"We know 8 out of 10 Americans are looking for [a sweetener] like that," said Etienne Veber, chief executive officer of Merisant, citing company research. He said Equal Sugar Light should be available nationally by the fall.
