St. Louis-Based Biotechnology Firm Waits to Market Genetically Modified Wheat.

May 11--Monsanto Co. said Monday it will delay bringing genetically modified wheat to market, prompting some environmental activists to declare a victory.

The company, based in Creve Coeur, said it will wait until the market is ready to accept what would be, in essence, the first biotech table food. Soybeans, corn and canola -- the only edible GM crops on the market -- are used for animal feed and processing into oils.

"It's a pretty big watershed event. It's an indication that the tide has turned, (because) this was going to be the next big thing" in biotech crops, said Joseph Mendelson, legal director with the Washington-based Center for Food Safety. The...
