May 11--Investors worldwide were running scared at the prospect of an early rise in American interest rates. Friday's stronger-than-expected employment figures for April effectively paved the way for a rise in the Fed rate from 1 percent to 1 1/4 percent as early as June 30.
Neurotic dealers fear the Fed will now put its foot hard down and accelerate increases over the next year or two.
With Wall Street having closed 124 points off on Friday and the Nikkei and Hang Seng indices collapsing 554 and 435 points respectively overnight in the Far East, there was only one way for the Footsie to go. Down! It opened 50 easier and continued to drift on persistent nervous...
