Federal Rail Security Measures May Ground Oklahoma's 'Heartland Flyer'.

May 25--New federal railroad security directives introduced last week threaten to hinder Oklahoma's only passenger rail service by imposing costly measures on Amtrak, the state's homeland security director said.

Kerry Pettingill on Friday said new measures aimed at preventing terrorism on the nation's railroad lines will cause financial strain on Amtrak, and could ultimately pose problems for the state's Heartland Flyer.

"If they end up putting some mandatory requirements on security, I think they're going to have quite a cost," he said. "And obviously they're having a hard time making a profit in business. Certainly that will have to be a concern."
