Regional Trucking Company's Shutdown Hits Workers in Rhode Island.

May 26--The abrupt closing over the weekend of USF Red Star, a regional trucking company, has left 132 employees at its Cumberland facility out of work.

Triggered by a union dispute, Sunday's unexpected closure of USF Corp.'s Red Star unit cost about 2,400 employees across the Northeast their jobs -- including 229 people working in terminals in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and Vermont.

A strike by Red Star's unionized workers on Friday caused 20 percent of the Northeast trucking company's customers to steer their business elsewhere, resulting in a 20-percent drop in sales, according to Jon Austin, a spokesman for USF. On Sunday, the...
