Southwest Airlines Offers Early Retirement Package.

May 28--Southwest Airlines Co. has offered an early retirement program to most of its 31,500 employees, the first early-out package offered by the Dallas-based discount carrier since 1988.

Employees asked for an early retirement option last year when the airline offered a similar deal to 1,100 reservations workers whose positions were eliminated when the airline closed three call centers, said spokeswoman Beth Harbin. About half of those workers took the package and left the airline, she said, while many took other jobs with the carrier.
