Southwest Airlines Offers Early Retirement Package to Its Workers.

May 28--Executives with Southwest Airlines hope that a voluntary early retirement package will help keep down the carrier's costs, which have been under pressure from high fuel prices and airport expenses.

The Dallas-based discount airline, the nation's sixth-largest carrier, said Thursday that it is offering employees a combination of cash, medical benefits and free travel to leave their jobs.

Southwest spokesman Ed Stewart said the offer came at the request of employees, who want the opportunity to take the same buyout that was recently offered to employees at three reservations centers that the airline closed.
