May 28--Philip Green has fired the opening fusillade in what promises to be the most symbolic British takeover battle of the decade.

But we should not be surprised. Green has been lying in wait for Marks and Spencer since 1999 when his first effort was rebuffed after the disclosure of share dealings in M&S by his wife Tina.

This fight also opened to the sound of share dealings. A sharp rise in M&S shares in early afternoon, from 290 pence to 345 pence, forced Green and his takeover vehicle Revival Acquisitions to reveal their hand.
