May 29--GREEN OPENS THE FLOODGATES: No one should doubt the seriousness of Philip Green's approach for Marks & Spencer. The fact that he has been able to attract two of the pillars of the City, Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch, into his corner speaks for itself.

The cry on the financial markets for a long time is that M&S needs a retail heavyweight to sort it out. Green is seen as having just the right skills to do that.

But he is unlikely to get a clear run. Indeed, after the bruising experience of his 1999 assault on the citadel of Baker Street, a "bear hug," in which the predator seeks to smother the hunted into sub-mission, looks more likely. Going hostile...
