Jun. 2--NEW YORK -- Corporate providers of services legally distributing music online totaled 107 worldwide as of May 31, up from just over 20 a year earlier, an industry body said Tuesday.
The fivefold jump was spurred by the success of Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes Music Store, launched in April 2003, which has motivated other companies to set up affiliates offering legitimate online music services, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said.
Currently, 24 download service providers are operating in North and South America, 63 in Europe and 16 in the Asia-Pacific area, the London-based body said.
