Illinois Wine Distributors Weather Challenge, But New Legal Battle Looms.

Jun. 3--New contracts have buoyed the state's largest wine and liquor distributor since a federal judge two years ago made it easier for alcohol manufacturers to leave Judge & Dolph Ltd. for other distributors.

Instead of losing business, as many expected, Judge & Dolph projects revenue of about $500 million this year, up more than 50 percent from $325 million in 2002. And the firm, owned by the powerful Wirtz family, has grown enough to hire an additional 180 workers since then and now employs 800.
