Briggs & Stratton Acquisition Could Put Pressure on Power Equipment Makers.

Jun. 3--Briggs & Stratton Corp. agreed to pay $227 million to purchase Simplicity Manufacturing Inc., the Port Washington maker of lawn-and-garden equipment, altering the landscape of an industry that employs thousands of Wisconsin workers.

Wauwatosa-based Briggs is the world's largest maker of air-cooled gasoline engines for lawn mowers and other outdoor power equipment. Simplicity will generate about $350 million in sales this year from a range of products including garden tractors and snow throwers.

Through the purchase, Briggs could gain better access to Simplicity's products sold through a network of more than 10,000 dealers. The small-engine maker...
