Cosmo Oil Co. Announces Possible Data Leak Involving 923,000 Credit-Card Users.

Jun. 8--TOKYO -- Cosmo Oil Co. said Tuesday it is highly likely that personal data on 923,000 of 2.2 million people registered as its credit card users as of March have been leaked.

The oil distributor, which announced the leakage of customers' names, addresses and telephone numbers in late April, said other data such as birth dates, sex and vehicle license numbers may have been leaked as well.

Keiichiro Okabe, the chairman and president of Cosmo Oil, told reporters he believes the information was stolen by an outside system development firm employee during an operational test for a newly developed computer system.
