Log-Sawing Ceremony Planned for IKEA Opening in New Haven, Conn.

Jun. 9--IKEA will open its New Haven store July 28, but it won't cut a ribbon to celebrate the Swedish home furnishings retailer's first outlet in New England.

Two people will saw a log in half.

Log sawing is a Swedish tradition that symbolizes a new beginning. IKEA opens all of its U.S. stores by halving a log with a cross-cut saw to show shoppers that IKEA has roots clear and distinct from other retailers.

"It's what we do to remind people that we're Swedish," IKEA spokesman Joseph Roth said.

Log or ribbon, it probably won't matter to most shoppers. The IKEA opening already is expected to be the most highly anticipated grand...
