Infected Home Computers Send Out Majority of Spam, Study Finds.

Jun. 9--Eighty percent of those hated "spam" e-mail messages originate from home computers that have been secretly taken over by spammers, a new study found.

"We were surprised at these numbers ourselves," said Dave Caputo, cofounder and chief executive of Sandvine Inc., a networking equipment maker in Waterloo, Ontario.

Spammers peddle sexual aids, diet pills, and get-rich-quick schemes by sending billions of unwanted e-mails to unwilling recipients. But Internet companies are cracking down on spam by blocking Internet addresses used by the spammers.
