Jun. 9--After a three-year break, Portland International Airport again will be welcoming travelers direct from Asia as Northwest Airlines starts nonstop service between Portland and Tokyo on Thursday.
While the region's business community lauds the convenience of a direct connection to Japan and other Asian cities, the local travel industry sees two-way opportunities.
"A large chunk of our efforts has been in raising the awareness of Portland as a destination to someone very far away who may not be aware of it," said Laura Liu, vice president of international-revenue management for Northwest, based in Eagan, Minn.
