Jun. 11--Sara Lee Branded Apparel said yesterday that it will cut 4,175 jobs, including 150 in Winston-Salem, and close five Central American plants as it prepares for the expiration of textile import quotas on Jan. 1.

The division, based in Winston-Salem, said it is consolidating production of its intimates, sportswear and underwear lines.

"These changes better align our resources to execute strategies for future growth in a quota-free global market," said Lee Chaden, the new chief executive of the division. "It is imperative that we redeploy resources to maintain and enhance our long-term competitive position."
