Jun. 13--Roger Valine, leather briefcase lashed to his Harley-Davidson, cruised out of the Vision Service Plan parking lot in Rancho Cordova and headed for a business meeting in Davis.
The jaunt on his 1993 Heritage Softail, a gift from his wife, Marie, offers the first clue that you're dealing with a maverick CEO.
His leadership style stresses accountability, respect and support. Although he demands a lot from the 2,100 employees at the nation's largest eye-care plan, they give the company's work environment such high marks that VSP routinely ranks as one of the best places to work in national surveys.
