September 11 Commission Will Examine Deployment of U.S. Air Defenses.

Jun. 16--WASHINGTON -- The independent commission examining the Sept. 11 attacks will complete its public hearings this week by examining why fighter jets deployed to protect the nation's air space never fired on aircraft attacking the capital.

The commission will question top generals about the way America's air defenses were deployed, and whether they gave adequate attention to unconventional threats, such as hijacked planes.

A staff member said the commission will release research examining the timing of orders up and down the chain of command, as well as coordination between civilian air traffic controllers and the military.

The commission's final hearing begins Wednesday...
