Japan Broadcaster TV Asahi Settles Suit with Farmers over 1999 Dioxin Report.

Jun. 16--TOKYO -- TV Asahi Corp. reached an agreement Wednesday with a group of farmers to settle a damages suit they filed claiming that a news report on dioxin contamination broadcast in 1999 triggered a plunge in vegetable sales.

The settlement package was reached at the Tokyo High Court under conditions that the Tokyo-based broadcast network offered an apology to the 29 farmers in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, and pay them 10 million yen. The farmers had sought about 26 million yen in damages.

TV Asahi has admitted in the accord that parts of its report were "inappropriate" and caused "misunderstanding" among viewers.
