Rent Increases for Poor Could Be Averted in Long Beach, Calif.

Jun. 17--LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Thousands of residents on federal rental assistance in Long Beach that are facing rent hikes may get a reprieve in lieu of new funding sources the city's Housing Authority Bureau may tap.

The Housing Authority Bureau Commission last week voted to reduce funding to landlords participating in the Sec. 8 program, a move that would effectively raise the rents of more than 4,000 renters by roughly 15 percent. The reduction averages $90 for those affected. The cuts would go into effect Aug. 1.

A vote to rescind that directive is expected to be heard at a commission hearing at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at City Hall, 333 W. Ocean...
