Association of Border Workers Files Suit against Department of Labor.

Jun. 18--A group representing thousands of Hispanic workers who lost their manufacturing jobs because of the North American Free Trade Agreement filed a lawsuit Thursday against the U.S. Department of Labor, alleging inadequate job retraining programs for workers who speak little or no English.

The Asociacion de Trabajadores Fronterizos, or Association of Border Workers, accused the Labor Department of violating the Trade Act of 1974. That law created the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which provides job retraining and other assistance to manufacturing workers who lose their jobs because of trade agreements like NAFTA.
