Study in Scotland Finds Cholesterol Drug May Fight Arthritis.

Jun. 19--Scientists in Scotland have found the first compelling evidence that statins -- the class of drugs capable of reducing cholesterol -- may also fight rheumatoid arthritis.

A team from Glasgow Royal Infirmary found in a small but statistically significant study that arthritis symptoms in patients given 40 milligrams daily of atorvastatin (Lipitor) experienced symptom relief.

However, patients reported a reduction of swelling in only three joints, fewer than the six to eight joints relieved with rheumatoid arthritis drugs, known as TNF blockers.
