Jun. 20--For a second, I thought somebody had hacked the National Bureau of Economic Research Website. Or that the august economic thinkers had somehow gotten their wires crossed with Cosmopolitan magazine.

But no. There among the scholarly papers, right between "Optimal Unemployment Insurance When Income Effects are Large" and "Intrahousehold Resource Allocation in Cote d'Ivoire" was one entitled: "Money, Sex, and Happiness: An Empirical Study."

This was not a gag done by bored graduate students. The authors, Andrew Oswald and David Blanchflower, are genuine researchers with a serious mission -- to explore and chart the economics of happiness.
