Jun. 22--RAIN PLAYING HAVOC WITH HAY PRODUCTION: Dairy and horse owners should consider how summer weather could affect hay supplies if they plan to buy large amounts of it. Purdue University reports Indiana should have plenty of it for beef cattle because they can get by on hay with less nutritional value, but there won't be as much high-quality hay for dairy herds.

Recent rains put a damper on what was shaping up to be a banner hay production year. Rain delayed the season's first alfalfa hay cutting in some areas, which means the quality is declining as it gets more mature, and a lot of hay that's been cut is laying in the field under rain.
