California Supreme Court to rule on election officials vs. Indians.

Jun. 24--The state Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to decide whether California election officials can sue Indian tribes for failing to abide by state campaign finance laws.

The high court's notice to take the case sets the stage for a decision that could have national reverberations, as tribes made wealthy by casino operations become increasingly bigger political players.

The case revolves around a 2002 suit the state Fair Political Practices Commission filed against the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The Palm Springs tribe is one of the state's most politically influential tribes and the only one in California to operate two casinos.
