Atlanta to be Southern headquarters for Wachovia's general banking operations.

Jul. 1--Atlanta will become the Southern headquarters for Wachovia's general banking operations when the Charlotte-based financial services company completes its multibillion-dollar purchase of SouthTrust.

It's too soon to say whether this designation would mean fewer branch closings and fewer jobs lost in Atlanta when the companies combine. Overall, the new Wachovia is expected to cut about 4,300 jobs and close 130 to 150 branches throughout its system.

"The decisions about branches and employees haven't been made yet," said Tom Coley, the SouthTrust executive who will lead the Atlanta office.
