Sony to release digital Walkman with built-in hard disk.

Jul. 1--TOKYO -- Making the announcement on the 25th anniversary of the introduction of its original Walkman portable music player, Sony Corp. said Thursday it will launch a serious challenge to Apple Computer Inc.'s market-leading iPod by releasing a digital Walkman with a built-in hard disk.
Sony will put the new Walkman NW-HD1, capable of storing up to 1,300 songs, on the Japanese market on July 10 to pave the way for global sales.
Containing a 20-gigabyte hard disk, the NW-HD1 can store songs equivalent to up to 900 compact discs and run up to 30 hours on a charge of its battery. It can be hooked up to a personal computer to download music.
