Reno, Nev.-based Sierra Pacific Power files proposal to put up gas-fired plant.

Jul. 2--Sierra Pacific Power Co. of Reno is proposing to build a 500-megawatt, gas-fired power plant at its Tracy power plant site as part of a proposed resource plan it filed Thursday with state regulators.

The proposed power plant would be operational in 2008 under the plan and would reduce the utility's reliance on volatile wholesale power markets.

The projects and other spending would total $47.8 million next year and $182.7 million the following year.

The utility also wants to upgrade the Valmy Generating Station to reduce air pollution and comply with new environmental standards, the company said.
