Jul. 9--Saab and Subaru cars will roll out of Lafayette next year when Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc.'s half-used plant assembles a seven-seat tall wagon in limited volumes for the Swedish brand.

The new Saab will have a different look but share an all-wheel-drive powertrain, chassis and electronics with Subaru's upcoming $35,000 flagship vehicle, industry analysts said Thursday.

SIA, a 2,642-employee plant that is one of the Lafayette-area's largest industrial employers, has been retooling to assemble the flagship, a midsize seven-seater engineered in Japan. The plant also makes the Subaru Baja, Legacy and Outback models.
