Jul. 13--A Rensselaer native and retired paper-industry executive will head the board at Besicorp-Empire Newsprint LLC, the company proposing a $680 million newsprint recycling facility slated for the former BASF site off Riverside Avenue.
Ben Thorp, 66, who retired as an executive at Georgia-Pacific Corp. in June, is helping to recruit other industry professionals to fill out the board, which could be in place by August, the company said.
The company hopes to start construction on the project -- a joint 505-megawatt power plant and paper recycling facility -- late this year or early in 2005 and be operating by 2007.
"I'm looking forward to it,"...
