Plymouth, Mass., nuclear power plant averts strike.

Jul. 14--Union workers at the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth have reached a tentative four-year contract agreement with plant owner Entergy Corp. that held off a strike threatened to begin moments after midnight last night.

The nearly 400 members of Local 369 of the Utility Workers Union of America who work at Pilgrim are set to ratify the contract in a vote tomorrow. The deal is expected to ensure no disruption in operations at the plant, which can produce 670,000 megawatts of electricity -- enough for more than 500,000 average homes -- as peak summer power demand and the July 26-29 Democratic National Convention in Boston loom.
