Closure of Wachovia's Shelton, Conn., call center to cost 275 jobs.

Jul. 14--Wachovia Bank is pulling the plug on its customer call center in Shelton, costing 275 employees their jobs.

The call center in Shelton and another in Delaware will be consolidated into a new $20 million center being built in Salem, Ore. The center is expected to open by the end of the year, and employ about 500.

The layoffs come as Connecticut tries to build momentum behind job growth, which has lagged the nation. But consolidation in the financial services industry -- as evidenced by Wachovia's call center closing -- still presents a stumbling block to those efforts.
