Woolworths in Britain already has eye on Christmas season.

Jul. 22--Woolworths kept its head above water in the first half despite the washout summer weather, which has hurt High Street retailers.

Fully five months ahead of the big day, Woolies managers are already plotting the Christmas assault on customers.

It books 40 percent of sales and profits in the run-up to Christmas, but had a disappointing 2003.

Sales for the 24 weeks to July 17 totalled UKpound 1.04 billion, up 7.4 percent, or 0.9 percent on an underlying basis, while margins continued to improve, the company said in a pre-close trading update.

City forecasters expect Woolies (down 1/2p at 45 1/4p) to make annual profits of UKpound 75m-UKpound 83m.
