AstraZeneca comes out fighting to quash fears over anti-cholesterol drug.

Jul. 23--AstraZeneca moved to quash fears over its key anti-cholesterol drug Crestor as it weighed in with better-than-expected second-quarter results.

The drugs giant has submitted a 30-page report to the US Food & Drugs Administration which it said shows Crestor is as safe as all the other so-called "statins" -- the class of drug -- currently on the market.

Controversy has dogged the treatment since the US consumer group Public Citizen said Crestor was more likely than rivals to produce the potentially muscle-wasting side effect called rhabdomyolysis which can be fatal.

This is the same problem which caused Bayer's Baycol fat-buster to be taken off sale.
