Office Depot quarterly profit up 34 percent.

Jul. 23--Office Depot Inc. posted a 34 percent rise in second-quarter profit Thursday, but Chairman Bruce Nelson's caution that recent sales hadn't met expectations drove shares down 98 cents to close at $16.53, a 6 percent drop.

"A number of retailers have experienced some softness in their recent sales outlook and, indeed, our retail sales have been below our expectations the last few weeks," Nelson said.

Chief Financial Officer Charles Brown said the company had not changed its overall outlook for 2004, however, and that Sunday's launch of back-to-school sales is expected to be strong.
