Jul. 27--BOSTON -- The American people want change, but they don't seem to want John Kerry. That's the mixed message from both anecdotes and opinion polls.

Kerry flew in here Sunday night for a "surprise" visit to Fenway Park. He threw out the first pitch -- and bounced it into the dirt. The boos were as loud as the cheers; there's no way to tell whether the fans' derision was aimed at his pitching arm or his candidacy. Or maybe it was the resentment of Bostonians toward all this politicking. Security concerns have put Beantown in a lockdown.

The uneven reaction to Kerry is a big change from the politics-mad Democratic past, when the unions and ethnics...
