Jul. 31--KILLEEN, Texas -- Plush leather seats, gleaming tile floors and the city's first escalator grace Killeen's new airport, which will receive its first flights on Monday.
At a VIP reception at the $83 million Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport last week, residents noshed on hors d'oeuvres and sipped beer in a spacious second-floor atrium overlooking the airfield.
"This is the biggest deal we've seen here," said Killeen City Council member Fred Latham.
Despite rapid growth in Killeen and nearby Fort Hood, the airport's prospects for attracting service beyond the two airlines that already fly here may not be very bright.
