Aug. 3--Two leading online search engines -- Yahoo and Ask Jeeves -- are joining the growing effort to attract people who want to find local businesses or services.
The announcements Monday are part of a move by Internet companies to wean consumers and advertisers from print versions of the Yellow Pages and other directories.
Yahoo's new product is called Yahoo Local (http://local.yahoo.com). It pulls together Internet Yellow Pages listings, mapping capabilities, user reviews and information pulled from merchant Web sites.
The Sunnyvale company has launched a test version of the service and will solicit user feedback.
