Al Qaeda updated pre-9/11 target surveillance in 2004, U.S. official says.

Aug. 3--WASHINGTON -- Al Qaeda's surveillance of American financial centers extended back at least to the year 2000 and was updated earlier this year, a senior U.S. government official said Monday.
Newly discovered evidence that the terrorist group was casing American office buildings prompted U.S. authorities Sunday to raise the terrorism alert level to high for financial centers in the New York area and Washington.
The senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that while much of the surveillance predated the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, some information about one of the targeted buildings was from 2004. The official didn't identify the building....
